Tension Release Exercises, as created by Dr. David Berceli are more than a simple number of exercises. The exercises are designed to fatigue certain muscles in the body, which then allow the body to release tension through neuromuscular tremors. These tremors release deep-rooted muscular tension, that enables the regulation of the nervous system so that a state of relaxation and calm is obtained. Our bodies are always slightly shaking, if you held your hand out in front of you and attempted to keep it perfectly still, you would soon notice the slight shaking as the opposing muscles in your arm attempt to hold the arm steady.
The exercises are designed to fatigue certain muscles in the body, which then enable the body to easily access and experience this kind of tremoring /shaking.
It is useful to do this with an experienced practitioner who has been trained and can ensure that you are safe and comfortable through the experience.
TRE can be considered as developing a new way to relate to your body. It is not uncommon for beginners to experience sensations that they may never have felt before, or to access emotions, thoughts, and feelings from the past.
Ultimately, TRE can reconnect you with your body and enable a deeper understanding of self. It can also enable the release of stuck patterns of energy within the body, which has corresponding beneficial effects on the mind.
Here is a brief list of ailments that can be worked with using TRE
- Stress
- Anxiety
- Restless Leg Syndrome
- Insomnia
- Intrusive Thoughts
- Inability to relax
- High blood pressure
- Bodily Tension
Another benefit of TRE is the ability to start a positive habit of emotional regulation. In other words, starting to be able to read the body and mind better and doing what is needed at the right moment to reduce stress and tension before it builds up and can become overwhelming. That is why it is useful initially to have a trained provider. As a certified provider I am trained to create safety and look out for signs that you’re emotionally regulated in the TRE session, and if not, to gently intervene. My role is to help create an environment that encourages safety and self-regulation sometimes through co-regulation. As a trained provider, I am also there to witness and observe and reflect on what I witnessed after the session. This can be very helpful to integrate the experience and get the most benefit from the TRE session.
TRE is experiential, so it can be difficult to describe outside the confines of a session. if this sounds intriguing or compelling, the best way to proceed is to book an introductory session. Or read further with the FAQ or TRE here.
